How to Stay Healthy This Spring

Written by Athina Crilley

Spring is like a new beginning. The sun starts to shine and the trees start to regrow their leaves. We begin to feel full of life, and we choose to spend more time outdoors.

Here are some top tips to stay healthy this spring.

Move more

Whatever form of exercise you enjoy, doing it every day will energise you. Follow a daily exercise routine and stay active. This will boost your immune system and make you feel refreshed and energised.

Eat a healthy diet

Eat a diet based around whole foods and fuel your body with nutritious foods. Make sure to eat a variety fruits and vegetables from every colour of the rainbow to get a range of vitamins and minerals. You will feel so much better simply by making healthy changes to your diet.

Try to avoid highly processed, sugary foods as this can deplete your immune system and make you feel groggy. A great way to remove processed foods from your diet is to cook your meals from scratch using healthy ingredients.

Take supplements

If you are struggling to obtain all of the essential vitamins and minerals in your diet, consider taking supplements. Key nutrients for staying healthy during spring are vitamins C, D, and E, and zinc.

Drink enough water

Staying hydrated is key to health, especially when it starts getting warmer during spring. Aim for 1.5-2 litres a day (more if you perform vigorous exercise), and try to limit your caffeine and alcohol intake.

Prioritise sleep

Sleep has a huge effect on health, in particular on the immune system. Ideally, we should aim for 6-8 hours of high-quality sleep to optimise our health. Create a night time routine to prepare yourself for bed each night so you drift off to sleep more easily.

Get outside

Connecting with nature can do wonders for your health. As the weather warms up, it begins easier to spend time outside. Take your dog for a long walk in the woods or meet some friends in your local park.

Remember to protect your skin whilst outside by wearing SPF-containing sun cream. Use products that have an SPF higher than 30 and contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to block harmful UVB and UVA rays.

Remove allergy triggers

Spring can present a bunch of problems for those with hay fever or asthma. Plants start to bloom and pollen fills the air. Regularly washing your clothing and linen, avoiding being outside at times when pollen count is high, and taking medications to reduce your symptoms are great ways to control your allergies during spring.
