Fat has become a very negative word, putting fats into the body, even more so.  The problem is that for most people there is no distinction between the good and the bad fats.  Pretty much everyone knows that if you don’t put oil in the engine of your car it seizes up and dies – this is a good analogy for a body lacking essential fatty acids (oils).

Fats In General

The main components of all fats are fatty acids, which consist of either saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. Fats that contain a high proportion of saturated fatty acids are generally solid at room temperature and are commonly known as saturated fats. They are usually derived from animal sources and we know them as butter, suet and lard, etc. We also have hydrogenated fats (artificial and bad). Partially hydrogenated fats are called trans fats (artificial and bad). We do require a small amount of saturated fat in our diet; the problem is that on a standard western-type diet too much hydrogenated and saturated fat is consumed.  Butter is far better than the artificial margarines; it contains butyric acid which is used, for example, by the fast turnover colorectal cells.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s)

These are liquid at room temperature. Essential fatty acids help to keep the arteries soft and pliable, this in turn, allows the blood to flow more freely, therefore helping to lower blood pressure.  The positive knock-on effects are inestimable.

Dr Alex Richardson, of the charity Food & Behavior states that, “consuming more of the vital Omega 3 fats found in fish and seafood is probably the single most important dietary change that most people could make to improve their health”.

Essential fatty acids are hormone precursors, these help to run and regulate bodily processes.  For example, lack of certain hormones is a cause of PMT. In males, lack off and hormonal imbalance negatively affect testosterone levels.  EFA’s up-regulate the metabolic rate which in turn allows the body to burn more calories and lose weight if that is a goal.  EFA’s are also a major source of energy.

What can EFA’s do for me?

  • Transport oxygen from red blood cells to the tissues
  • Are an anti-inflammatory via certain prostaglandin production
  • Regulate pressure in the eye, joints, and blood vessels, and mediating immune response
  • Regulate bodily secretions and their viscosity
  • Dilate or constricting blood vessels
  • Regulate circulation
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Regulate cell division rate
  • Maintain the fluidity and rigidity of cellular membranes
  • Regulate the inflow and outflow of substances to and from cells
  • Direct endocrine hormones to their target cells
  • Maintain proper kidney function and fluid balance
  • Prevent blood cells from clumping minimising clots
  • Regulate nerve transmission and communication
  • Support cardiovascular health

Deficiencies

Further examples relating to fatty acid deficiencies (there may be other causes also) are:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Poor muscle tone
  • Dry skin
  • Skin complaints
  • Poor sight
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Sweating for no reason (permeable body membranes)
  • Reproductive failure (male and female)
  • Poor wound healing
  • Possibly contributes to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease
  • Decreased growth in infants
  • More susceptible to infection

Note: Taking essential fatty acids helps to increase the metabolic rate, leading to weight loss under the right circumstances!

It would be a very good strategy to read and thoroughly understand food nutritional labels.  Look for the type of fat that is listed and try to avoid hydrogenated, trans and saturated fats

From The University of Maryland Medical Centre: “It is important to have the proper ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation and most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. The typical diet tends to contain 14 - 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, which many nutritionally oriented physicians consider to be way too high on the omega-6 side.

The Mediterranean diet, on the other hand, has a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Many studies have shown that people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption”.

When you buy Bioceuticals® Omega 3 Fish Oil 1000mg capsules you will have a very healthy addition to your daily diet.
