LIQUORICE

LiquoriceHundreds of potentially healing substances have been identified in liquorice, including compounds called flavonoids and various plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). The herb's key therapeutic compound is called glycyrrhizin (which is 50 or so times sweeter than sugar). It has a well-documented reputation for healing ulcers. It may lower stomach acid levels, relieve heartburn and indigestion, act as a mild laxative & generally soothe the digestive tract.

In the respiratory system it is said to have a similarly soothing and healing action, reducing irritation and inflammation. It is also said to have an expectorant effect, useful in irritating coughs, asthma and chest infections . Another benefit is, that it may help to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones making them more available to the body
