Vitamin D is somewhat the forgotten vitamin, yet it is vitally important for a myriad functions in the human body.

Vitamin D is somewhat the forgotten vitamin, yet it is vitally important for a myriad functions in the human body. It is required for the maintenance of normal bones, normal muscle function, normal teeth and for the normal function of the immune system.

Commonly, it is known as the sunshine vitamin due to the action of sunlight on the skin by ultraviolet radiation (sunlight) by the activation of a sterol.

Diet is usually a minor source of vitamin D. However foods such as oily fish and eggs contain very small amounts. It is almost impossible to obtain sufficient amounts of vitamin D from diet alone, without adequate exposure to sunlight.

Given our modern life-style where we spend most of our time indoors and the fact that a modern ‘western-style-diet’ is nutrient deficient we are at considerable risk of a vitamin D deficiency.

Indeed, many researchers consider this situation to be a pandemic.

In times past, such was the problem of vitamin D deficiency that rickets was common in children and adults.  Rickets is a softening of the bones coupled with deformity, notably a bowing of the legs due to the weight of the torso on the softening bones.

There are several forms of vitamin D, however vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the ‘real’ vitamin D as it is the same substance that is produced in human skin in response to exposure to sunlight.   It is therefore the most preferable form to obtain via supplementation.
